Wednesdays, 3:30 – 5:30pm
Starting September 15th

This Fall, there are 6 community center City Studio Satellites where the San Francisco Art Institute City Studio classes will be held: the Bay View Opera
House (filmmaking and video for YouTube), SCRAP (sculpture and installation) both in the Bay View District; the Excelsior Boys & Girls Club in the
Excelsior District (mural painting); the East Bay Asian Youth Center in Central East Oakland (sound, video, and media lab); SOMARTS in the South of Market District (ceramic sculpture); and Galeria De La Raza in the Mission District (Youth Design and Media Lab).

The City Studio Program’s mission is to offer art classes to underserved youth, ages 12-19, in their own neighborhoods and ultimately, to assist them in preparing a portfolio for application to college. The program was initiated in 2005, and had been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Haas Foundation, the Irvine Foundation, the SURDNA foundation, and many other organizations.

This fall, the student stipend is $200 to attend 35 hours of classes, which amounts to approximately $5.70 per hour. Students are required to sign a “Student Commitment” contract that they will attend the classes in order to earn the stipend (also attached). Once students complete four semesters of City Studio classes, they are eligible for full scholarship into the San Francisco Art Institute’s Pre-College program, where they can take summer classes for AP college credit.

Prospective students will need to complete and return an application via email or mail or bring to the first class, to be considered for the program. Contact JD Beltran at citystudio@sfai.edu or 415.351.3530 for an application or more information.

About Shana and emiko
Shana and emiko are returning Scrap workshop teachers. They have been doing this workshop with kids, adults, and families for 4 years, and every time it’s a new experience. They say “it’s amazing seeing people’s creativity unleashed, especially in young kids. As artists working in alternative materials, it’s a great way to introduce people to a new way of looking at common objects, even trash, and repurposing it into something personal.” Last years’ workshop filled up quickly, so reserve your space early!

Whether you have done some mosaics before and need some inspiration, or are just starting out and need instruction, you won’t want to miss this workshop! During this two part workshop you will be using mastic (tile adhesive) and various tiles and vitreous glass to create your design with. If you are a beginning student, you will be working on a square tile. If you are a more advanced student, you may bring in something of your own to mosaic. In the first class you will learn techniques for applying tile to a variety of surfaces. You will have the opportunity to create and execute a piece of you own design. The second class will be devoted to the process of grouting. This is always an exciting class, as Jane is an experienced mosaic artist and teacher, and working with tile is a very tactile and visually stimulating experience! The colors are yummy and the results are extremely rewarding!

About Jane
Jane has been working with mosaics for about 7 years. The minute she learned how to work in this medium, she fell in love with it. Jane likes to work with color, both in glass and tile. She loves how it enhances any space it occupies. Jane’s work is primarily privately owned, with the exception of some permanent installations at two public schools, where she has worked extensively with elementary school children. The San Francisco public schools where you can find Jane’s work are Lakeshore and Gordon Lau Elementary Schools.

SCRAP will be hosting a workshop at SFPT’s Breaking Ground: Urban Gardening Youth Conference on Saturday, June 19th from 11:00 to 11:50am in Golden Gate Park’s SF County Fair Building.
Check out their website here for more information about the conference.

Hanging Gardens of Frisco w/ Ian Colon
Join artist Ian Colon to learn a fun easy solution for saving space and rethinking the urban landscape and the relationship of waste to our ecosystem. Participants will be turning donated vinyl banners into a vertical garden; transforming blight into beauty with a modular pocket system that allows as many or as few carbon catching sprouts to proliferate as the maker desires. Using only the vinyl, string, duct tape, dirt and plants, participants will create a space saving garden that can be installed anywhere. The project starts with choosing a variety of shapes and sizes for the pockets that will hold the plants. Then the pockets will be cut to size. Holes will be punched along the length of the pocket and supporting vinyl, then it will be tied together with string. After all knots have been tied the seams are sealed with duct tape and decorated to the makers desire.

This is a great project for those living in cramped quarters, solariums, bathrooms, city installations, offices or wherever..

Estimated time for project: 50 min

About Ian
Ian Colon is an artist based in Oakland who is interested in the way the artwork accumulates value and what the notions of ‘genius’ and ’special’ produce in behavior patterns. He recently moved to the Bay Area to pursue a lifestyle more in touch with nature and humor. He is an avid cyclist and member of a local CSA.

Saturday, July 24th, 1-4pm fee: $20

If you have always wanted to learn how to crochet and use some of the beautiful yarns available at SCRAP, now is your chance! During this workshop Rene will start off by showing you how to hold a crochet needle and how to read crochet instructions. From there, you’ll learn three crochet stitches-chain, slipstitch and double crochet stitch. From these basic stitches, Rene will show you how to make a traditional granny square, how to alter the granny square and how to change yarn in the square. You will be using yarn from SCRAP, an “H” crochet hook, a plastic large eye needle and printed instructions. In addition to learning how to crochet a granny square you’ll also learn how to sew ends into the work and use the granny squares in a variety of ways. You will leave with at least two granny square samples, the materials to crochet more granny squares, instructions for various squares, and ideas of what can be done with them.

About Rene

Rene began crocheting when she was twelve and has loved it ever since! She mostly makes baby clothes and blankets, but occasionally makes adult clothing, hats and scarves. She teaches crochet as a volunteer at the Main Library in SF as well. In addition, she always volunteers to make blankets and baby clothes for her friends and family and has sold the layettes and preemie hats she makes. Rene loves the wide variety of materials available at SCRAP and can’t wait to finish school so she can attend some of SCRAP workshops herself this summer!

Join artist Leah Virsik for this SCRAP workshop and learn how to bind your own small journal with a running stitch. During this workshop you will use paper, fabric, buttons, beads, thread, wallpaper, elastic and more to create a small hand bound journal. You will spend some time perusing the aisles of SCRAP to figure out what materials to use for your book. Leah will then, show you how to incorporate the images and small items into your journal in interesting ways. She will also talk with you about “renegade sewing” and incorporating stitching into your work. You will be inspired by, and learn from, samples of her own work that she’ll share with you during the workshop!

About Leah

Leah enjoys making books and painting. She has a passion for paper and bookbinding and daydreams about art when she’s not actually making it. She creates books out of new and repurposed materials and works with paper, fabric, plastic, metal, acrylic and collage. She loves to create books and finds they are a fun, accessible thing to make. What’s exciting to her about this is discovering all the different materials one can use to make books. What she loves about SCRAP is looking through the potential materials and how it’s organized. She finds treasures that she might not have even considered using in her artwork if it weren’t for SCRAP!
