SCRAP is the Bay Area’s oldest creative reuse center, and has been diverting waste from landfills for use as art supplies for more than 30 years. SCRAP was founded in 1976 to provide art supplies for teachers in the San Francisco Public School system. SCRAP rescues 250 tons of materials from businesses and individuals and provides them to artists, teachers, nonprofits, and the public for very low cost to inspire creativity.

SCRAP’s mission is to stimulate creativity and environmental awareness in children and adults through promoting the creative reuse of materials that traditionally have been discarded as waste.

Job descriptions

Creative Reuse Warehouse Position

The position will be for 32 hours a week: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm to start immediately.

Warehouse staff, along with the warehouse coordinator, maintain the appearance of the SCRAP warehouse and manage all incoming donations from inspecting and approving donations, sorting and organizing materials before they go out on the floor, displaying and stocking in the warehouse space, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility overall. Warehouse staff report to the Warehouse Coordinator and the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities

Coordinate daily activities with coworkers and Warehouse Coordinator
Maintain the overall appearance, safety and accessibility of key areas at SCRAP
Manage materials donated to SCRAP
Work with volunteers – assist with projects or to get set up with projects

Materials Depot – includes the intake area, the warehouse space, workshop space, all storage areas and outside space
•            Maintain safety and accessibility to key areas
•            Maintain the display of materials and signage in the warehouse and outside
•            Maintain the organization of materials on the shelves
•            Maintain the cleanliness of all spaces – sweeping and clearing the aisles each day, cleaning and painting on a regular basis
•            Making sure scale is kept clear for new donations
•            Clearing projects out of workshop space after volunteers are done

Accepting Donations
•            Inspect materials to make sure all materials are appropriate donations
•            Weigh each donation, enter information in Intake Log including donor name, date, weight and types of materials
•            Provide donation receipt if requested

Sorting and Organizing Donations

•            Sort and organize all donations before shelving
•            Sort all small materials into appropriate bins
•            Fill carts with larger donations of similar materials for ease of shelving
•            Roll or set aside fabric for rolling
•            Inform/coordinate/consult with Front Desk staff about potentially “valuable” donations when they come in

Stocking Donations
•            Check organization of materials on shelves regularly
•            Reorganize materials on shelves when disorganized and/or to make room for new donations
•            Take full bins out to the warehouse space to shelve

Assist SCRAP clients to
•            bring in their donations
•            find materials in the warehouse
•            answer questions about what we accept, what we have in stock, and where  materials are located in warehouse
•            get materials down off shelves when needed

Qualifications
Passion for environmental issues, the arts and education
Must have knowledge of arts and crafts and familiarity with a variety of materials, including a good grasp of prices
Thrive in a collaborative atmosphere while able to make split second decisions
Good communication and collaboration skills
Ability to work independently and be self motivated
Ability to follow specific directions as well as problem solve independently
Ability to follow through on projects
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly throughout the day
Must like working with your hands and organizing materials
Must be able to attend monthly staff meetings on the 15th of the month
Good spatial aptitude
Retail experience desirable

Front desk

The position will be for 40 hours a week: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9AM to 5PM to start immediately.

Must have retail experience
Passion for environmental issues, the arts and education
Must have knowledge of arts and crafts and familiarity with a variety of materials
Ability to perform addition in your head
Thrive in a collaborative atmosphere while able to make split second decisions
Must be able to handle stressful situations
Excellent customer service and people skills
Good receptionist skills and ability to juggle multiple responsibilities
Warehouse experience a plus
Ability to lift heavy boxes
Must like working with your hands and organizing materials
Must be able to attend monthly staff meetings on the 15th

The front desk staff will be responsible for:

Front desk
•         communicate and coordinate with warehouse staff regarding large incoming donations
•         welcome clients to SCRAP
•         answer phone during operating hours
•         assist in pricing donated materials
•         evaluate and price client selections
•         perform cashier duties using a cash register and square
•         answering questions about donations/pick-ups and what materials SCRAP accepts
•         write hauling orders for any donations that need pick-ups
•         advise clients on alternate materials to use for projects

Warehouse duties: Assist warehouse coordinator and warehouse staff in:
•         answer questions about what materials are on-hand at SCRAP
•         write all relevant info in Intake Log for donations brought in by clients
•         provide donation letter if requested by client
•         sort and organize diverse materials for shelving such as:
sort, fold and roll fabric
sort cards and calendars
assist in preparation of seasonal displays
•         restock materials in warehouse
•         position materials on the depot floor to sell
