SFAI City Studio at SCRAP
Calling Talented Teens! Take a Sculpture
Class at SCRAP with SFAI City Studio!
Wednesdays, 3:30 – 5:30pm
Starting September 15th
This Fall, there are 6 community center City Studio Satellites where the San Francisco Art Institute City Studio classes will be held: the Bay View Opera
House (filmmaking and video for YouTube), SCRAP (sculpture and installation) both in the Bay View District; the Excelsior Boys & Girls Club in the
Excelsior District (mural painting); the East Bay Asian Youth Center in Central East Oakland (sound, video, and media lab); SOMARTS in the South of Market District (ceramic sculpture); and Galeria De La Raza in the Mission District (Youth Design and Media Lab).
The City Studio Program’s mission is to offer art classes to underserved youth, ages 12-19, in their own neighborhoods and ultimately, to assist them in preparing a portfolio for application to college. The program was initiated in 2005, and had been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Haas Foundation, the Irvine Foundation, the SURDNA foundation, and many other organizations.
This fall, the student stipend is $200 to attend 35 hours of classes, which amounts to approximately $5.70 per hour. Students are required to sign a “Student Commitment” contract that they will attend the classes in order to earn the stipend (also attached). Once students complete four semesters of City Studio classes, they are eligible for full scholarship into the San Francisco Art Institute’s Pre-College program, where they can take summer classes for AP college credit.
Prospective students will need to complete and return an application via email or mail or bring to the first class, to be considered for the program. Contact JD Beltran at citystudio@sfai.edu or 415.351.3530 for an application or more information.
