Crochet Jam

with Ramekon O'Arwisters

Enjoy crochet in a community-art based event hosted by Ramekon O'Arwisters. Crochet Jam, hosted by sculptor Ramekon O'Arwisters, uses the folk-art tradition of crocheting strips of fabric into free-form and organic soft sculptures to foster social interaction, creativity, and liberation. There aren't any rules nor patterns. Crochet Jam is an opportunity for play, experimentation, and for allowing the material to transform naturally without any expectations nor any attempt to control the outcome. Participants become a conduit for the transformation of the material without any resistance, whether they like what they see or not. Participants just crochet and calmly observe without judgment or critique.

No attempt is made to dictate the creative process and there is no focus on the finished product. Basic instruction in crochet 🧶 provided in-person or virtually during the event.

Botanical Clay Tiles

Celebrate Earth Month by creating beautiful clay tiles with plants! Learn how to make ceramic tiles using plants or flowers from around your home or neighborhood. In this workshop, artist Angie Wilson will guide you through working with air dry clay, rolling it into slabs and creating impressions of plants to make decorative clay tiles.

The RePurposed FrankenShirt

with Paul Gallo

The plain old t-shirt gets a transformation under the direction of master sewist Paul Gallo. Paul will lead workshop attendees through a fun process of cutting up three t-shirts into various puzzle pieces and sewing them back together to create new patterns and color combinations. This workshop will lead garment repair enthusiasts through the process using a straight stitcher machine with a zig zag stitch. If you want to bring an overlock, feel free! This class will be all about community and helping each other where we can, so be ready to make friends and walk away with something unique. We will have t-shirts available to use, but feel free to bring your own. We will be combining 2-3 t-shirts into one.

Moving Wooden Toys

with Sebastian Petersen

Local artist and educator Sebastian Petersen will be leading workshop attendees in a fun (yet safe!) workshop making MOVING wooden toys. This workshop will focus on using sustainable wood materials--often old vintage toys and blocks from simpler times--to create wooden characters and mini sculptures with basic movement abilities. The workshop is for ages 8+ and minors should have an adult in attendance. Adults are also encouraged to attend for inner child purposes.

Using SCRAP magazines, paper and found photographs students will be given guidance and instruction on repurposing found materials to create new portraits and landscapes. Mitsu will take students through the aisles of SCRAP and show them his process for choosing materials--tips and tricks for what raw materials work well for collage.

Free Teacher Workshop: Social Emotional Learning - Facilitating Problem Solving

with Merritt Richmond

Join us for an exploration of techniques and tools to help build your students' social emotional skills. We will create class notebooks and discuss ways to use them effectively to settle disputes and encourage honest, respectful discussions. Using SCRAP supplies we will make other facilitation tools such as talking sticks, posters, table signs, puzzles and puppets. A variety of approaches will be explored and participants' great ideas will be incorporated into the conversation.

Sewing for Beginners with Emma Armstrong

Sewing novice or never touched a needle and thread before? We have the workshop for you! Advance your sewing knowledge with the help of Emma Armstrong. Emma will take you through everything from threading a needle and hand sewing basics, to learning how to select your fabric, creating simple closures, and even how to use a sewing machine. Participants will then take their new skills and create a small pouch completely from scratch.

This workshop is appropriate for all ages! Please keep in mind that we will be using sharp needles and pins. Minors MUST be accompanied by an adult with a ticket. 

We have 7 sewing machines at SCRAP so participants will learn on machines in pairs. If you have a machine and you're able to bring it to the workshop with you, please select the appropriate ticket.

Free Teacher Workshop: Five Easy Art Projects to Spark Creativity (for free!) with Petra Schumann

There are countless ways to use supplies from SCRAP and items from your own recycle bin to spark creativity in your students. In this hour-long workshop, art instructor Petra Schumann will introduce five such projects, let you try them, and show you where to find the supplies you’ll need at SCRAP. No art experience necessary! The projects are geared toward K-8 classrooms, and all teachers are welcome.

A Stitch in Time: Visible Mending with the Mending Collective

In this workshop, we will consider a selection of maps and how we might invite our students to explore them to learn about geography, history, and mathematical concepts. We will also create our own maps - of places both real and imagined. Finally, participants will use maps as a tool for colláge and a jumping-off point for personal expression.

Beading on Fabric with Aurie Stetzel

Dive into beading on fabric with Aurie Stetzel. Aurie will walk participants through beading basics such as border trims, creating an appliqué, and creating solid sections of beading. Participants can either bring in a garment to add beadwork to, or create a 1920's style headband. No matter what you bead, you'll be sure to dazzle!

Gelli Printing with Raine Robichaud

Learn about printing with gelli plates, an easy diy printmaking process! We will learn how to create textures and layers with gelli plates and household and natural materials as well as how to transfer images from magazines. The gelli plates we will be using do not contain any animal products and are nontoxic. Join us to explore this fun and open-ended printmaking process! 

Quilted Table Runners with Lorraine Woodruff-Long

September 6th & October 4th, 2023

Make a 2-sided quilted table runner in two sessions! Learn the basics of quilting from this two-session class by making a double-sided runner for your table. In September you’ll learn to cut and sew fabric together to make a front and back (size of your choosing.) In October you’ll learn to “sandwich” your pieces with batting and machine quilt your runner, then finish it with a binding edge. This workshop is great for all quilting experience levels!

This is a 2 part workshop! The first workshop will be on September 6th from 6pm-8pm. The second workshop with be on October 4th from 6pm-8pm. By purchasing a ticket you are signed up for both dates. We do not offer single dates of this workshop.

Patchwork Pillows with Johny Marquez

September 2nd, 2023

Johny will guide participants through his process of selecting and collaging second hand fabrics and scrap materials into patchwork pieced compositions. Participants create their own patchwork compositions and construct them into their own decor pillows.

The use of a sewing machine is required for this workshop. SCRAP has a limited number of sewing machines which is reflected in the ticketing. Please bring your own machine if you are able to!

Everything will be provided to use but you might like to bring in some of your own painted papers and scraps. If you don't like craft blades (xactos), this class isn't for you. However, I will show you how to use them.

Weaving the Fabric of the Universe with Angie Wilson

We will explore interconnectivity through the delightful, meditative practice of weaving. We will create simple hand looms and play with various weaving techniques while contemplating the ancient as well as Einsteinian metaphor of the fabric of the universe, musing on the interconnectivity of space and time, people and place, emotional and physical bodies. Participants will become cosmic weavers, exploring the ways in which thread and fabric are useful models for understanding the structure of the universe. We will experiment with color interaction, manipulate different kinds of materials, and celebrate the infinite possibilities of creative expression.

Star Book Mobile with Stephanie Jucker

June 3rd, 2023

Discover how to make a star book mobile using upcycled papers and collage. In this class students will learn how to combine the basic structure of a star book with the theatrical 3D effects of a tunnel book. Using decorative papers, and other mixed media they will find out how to construct a three dimensional tableau in each alcove of the star. The resulting mobile will rotate when suspended and create a playful sense of narrative as each scene is revealed.

Upcycle / Print / Repeat: Custom Stationery with Thea Sizemore

May 6th, 2023

Participants will scavenge art parts in the Depot for printing their own stationery. Thea Sizemore will introduce a variety of methods for creating images on card stock and envelopes including creating stamps from found items, stenciling, layering and tips for creating editions/set of note cards. Students will then have time to explore techniques and produce their own set of upcycled relief-printed cards. No experience necessary and open to all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Celebrate Earth Day with a workshop that packs a lot of fun into a small package. Using rubber odds and ends, we will carve and print small blocks to create our own note cards, wrapping paper and mini prints. No previous carving experience required!

Korean Bojagi Gift Wrapping

Discover a variety of unique gift-wrapping methods using reusable wrapping cloths to bring your gift-giving skills to the next level! In Korea, traditional wrapping cloths are known as Bojagi, which are similar to Japan's Furoshiki. These beautiful wrapping cloths are a wonderful way to present gifts or transport everyday items, while also reducing the environmental impact by reusing them over and over again.

All materials are provided and you will also be sent home with some Bojagi wrapping cloths and step-by-step wrapping demonstration worksheets. All ages are welcome to participate!

About Bojagi

Bojagi is a traditional Korean folk art consisting of patchwork cloths made from remnants of fabric such as cotton, silk, hemp and ramie. These practical cloths were present in Korea as early as the fourteenth century. They were made in a variety of sizes and used to cover and contain items such as gifts, tables, food, and other everyday objects. This art form has been historically passed down through generations of female artists and was used by Korean people from all classes.

These handmade cloths often held symbolic meaning and sentiment, expressed through their designs. Each color, pattern, and embroidery design was intentionally chosen to represent different well-wishes to the receiver of the Bojagi.

It is that time of the year, when the days are shorter, but the hearts are warmer. In this “Seasons Weavings” workshop you will learn how to create your holiday greeting cards with yarn scraps.

You will learn the basics of weaving that you will use to hand weave your decorations, then glue them to create personalized cards to send to your family and friends. Quilting Fundamentals: Log Cabin Block 2

Learn the basics of the versatile Court House Steps Log Cabin block and the beginnings to making your own quilts - from coasters to bed quilts! You will learn how to make a 12" Log Cabin block, and see how it can be replicated, stitched together with other blocks, and arranged in variety of patterns. I will show you examples of traditional and contemporary log cabin quilts.

We recommend bringing your own sewing machine if you have one, but we will have a limited number available to use as well. Beginners are welcome! A basic understanding of how to use a sewing machine is helpful, but no previous sewing experience is necessary.

Free Community Workshop: Making Polymer-Clay Jewelry

In this workshop, participants learned how to make play dough with Heidy Espinosa. Then they became familiar with polymer-clay, which they used to make small free-form shapes.  They also learned to use silicon molds to make intricate shapes.  The shapes were made into jewelry and personal adornment items using metal findings.  Then they were baked in a toaster oven to set the shape.  Great fun was had by all! Thanks Heidy & Alex for leading this workshop with such exuberance!  

Free Teacher Workshop: Printmaking for Children

In this workshop taught by Lita Blanc, participants learned how to create simple and beautiful prints with every day objects and materials such as paper clips, glue, tape and lace. The workshop was geared for teachers working with elementary school students, but the techniques learned could be easily adapted for other age groups.

Mixed Media & The Creative Process Workshop

This workshop, lead by Cathy Cruz, encouraged both adults and children to be playful and unleash their creativity. No experience was required! It was also the perfect workshop for those dreaming of making art but  not sure how to get started. And a great opportunity to engage the family in a fun weekend activity!

The demo was the vehicle to discuss basic abstract composition, techniques, and tools accessible to children. Later, all participants collaged printed papers with other SCRAP-found materials and mounted them on wood.

Free Teacher Workshop: Easy Abstract Art with Sherie Yazman

Art doesn't have to look like a photo! It can be a combination of lines, shapes, textures and colors. This lesson helped teachers introduce students to the elements of art and design. It was also created as a jumping off point for a variety of other projects.

The techniques were adaptable to most levels of instruction. And all projects were designed to be created with free or inexpensive materials.

Reversible Tote Bag Workshop with Peggy Airey-Van Diem

SCRAP Community Fundraiser

We  planned a family-friendly  fundraiser to help sustain our work as a flagship creative reuse center in the country, and to have some fun together as well!

We also enjoyed together a Mexican dinner by Bayview taqueria, Tato. And to keep the evening lively and entertaining for adults and children alike, we had music, a magician, a crafts table, and a fun music station made by up-cycled materials.

Free Teacher Workshop: Dia de los Muertos Paper Craft

Creative Collage with Sally Wassink

All skill levels are welcome - from beginners to experienced collagists, ages 12 years old and up.

In this 3-hour workshop we will view artwork by other collage artists, cover some basics about composition, talk about techniques & papers, share tips about tools, such as adhesives and save some time at the end of the workshop to view each others work & share experiences.

Students will be given some time at the beginning of the workshop to pull from SCRAP's multitude of paper resources to use in their artwork. The goal is to go home with a few (or a lot!) of finished pieces. If you have particular imagery in mind, please bring it with you as well!

Knit and Crochet Day!

Beginning Head & Figure Drawing

Led by artist David Tenorio, this Drawing workshop will teach you the fundamentals of drawing, tips for drawing the head/portrait and how to improve your observational abilities.

This 3 hour workshop will cover such topics as:

• Basic foundational drawing skills

• Tips and tricks for each feature of the head

• How do we observe quickly? Seeing what's most important

• The correct way to construct the head using the "Ball and Jaw" method

• Simple to advanced techniques for shading in pencil and ink

For both beginners and seasoned veterans, this workshop will provide instruction that spans all abilities and skill levels. The workshop will begin with a detailed lecture covering basic foundational drawing skills (with some advanced techniques included!) followed by a series of exercises and demonstrations on drawing the head, concluding with a Q&A segment at the end of the session. Each workshop participant will receive drawing materials to work with as well as a custom-made packet covering all instructed material.
