Collaboration is an important life skill that doesn’t come naturally to most young children. In this workshop, we’ll explore projects that go beyond just sharing supplies and allow children to experience the joys (and challenges) of working together. These collaborative projects help students build their problem-solving skills and take pride in artwork they’ve created together. But how can you get students to speak respectfully about others’ work? We’ll go over that, too! In this workshop, you’ll get to try several projects yourself using repurposed SCRAP materials and then shop with your $25 store credit.
Create home-grown adaptations to empower people with diverse abilities to make art. You don't need to purchase fancy adaptations to create! In this workshop, participants will leave with a tool kit of materials to adapt art making such as a pencil with yarn wound around it, felt or silicone mats and a ballpoint pen for making tactile images, cardboard with binder clips to stabilize materials, and more! This workshop is perfect for any educator whether it be in a traditional classroom, after school space, workshop environment, and anywhere in between. Great for all ages!
Creative and multi-dimensional assessment techniques give us a more comprehensive picture of our students. We will explore multiple final assessment formats that offer both structure and creative space. We will dive into rubrics and their capacity to increase student skills and accountability without requiring conformity. Most importantly, we will enjoy the creative process ourselves as we investigate, share great ideas and support our own continued learning.
What do you get when you cross junk journal ephemera and Universal Design for Learning?
The answer: Fun and functional learning opportunities. Attend this workshop to create teachables that come out of envelopes, open, swing, pop up, crinkle, sparkle and move. In addition to reaching students with varied learning styles and abilities, these scrappy teachables can stimulate ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) to support focus and relaxation as they learn. Plus, creating to enhance your curriculum with fun sensory materials may also bring you moments of peace. At the end of the workshop, take home a book of your examples to keep you inspired throughout the semester.

Do you strive to incorporate hands-on learning and creative projects into your classroom? SCRAP can support your goals with low-cost and high-interest materials. This workshop will present a variety of classroom projects for indoor recess days with everyday materials that are fun, creative and educational. Participants will create, explore, play and make meaningful discoveries - on our way to creating similar experiences for our students.
Employing creative reuse in your classroom helps build your students’ respect for materials, awareness of the waste that often permeates our culture, and curiosity about the circular economy. We will make our own projects utilizing SCRAP’s beautiful collection of repurposed materials as well as natural materials that are easily found in the environment. Discussion will center on environmental literacy and stewardship, community engagement, and mindful habit making.

Teachers - with the new school year comes the opportunity for creative, playful projects to get to know your students and set a positive social emotional tone in your classroom. We will use paint, glue, cut paper, and the treasure-chest of SCRAP materials to explore self-portraiture. Techniques will include language and literacy approaches as well as art and craft. We will experience the stress-reducing impact of creative exploration for ourselves and our students, and discuss the myriad ways that self-expression helps develop self-awareness, acceptance of differences in others, communication, cognitive flexibility, and a growth mindset.
With SCRAP as our treasure chest, we will build games that even high schoolers love for your classroom that will reinforce your curriculum content. More than that, games help your students to develop a joyful approach to learning, patience, tolerance for disappointment, flexible thinking, and deeper engagement. As we work, we will discuss best practices, share great ideas for games that work, and support each other’s creativity and delight as educators.
Creative thinking is an invaluable skill that results from tinkering with loose parts and open-ended materials. In this workshop we will engage with loose parts, and experience for ourselves the possibilities they afford. Those include collaboration, innovation, self-regulation, intrinsic motivation, natural curiosity, amongst many others! Participants in this workshop can expect to tinker, play and even create something of their own. They will also learn ways to introduce loose parts into their classrooms and how to utilize them to teach any areas of curriculum.
Educators and learners can benefit from some research-supported ideas for decreasing stress and anxiety in the classroom. In addition to diminishing stress, these ideas are associated with increasing engagement, learning, a sense of belonging, and a host of other positive educational outcomes. Participants will learn activities and ideas before collaborating with other educators to develop direct applications in their own classroom. During and following the workshop, participants will gather ideas about using SCRAP resources to support their new activities. We will offer concrete curricular and pedagogical ideas for your middle or high school classroom.
