SCRAP NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!
June 09, 2025
No. SCRAP is not closing — we’re growing! The move to our forever home is happening in stages, so we can keep serving the community throughout the transition.
The building we've called home for years at Toland & Newcomb is being demolished in 2026 to make way for SFUSD's new central kitchen. So we had a choice: find another lease and face this uncertainty again someday, or do something bolder.
We chose bold. SCRAP has purchased a 26,000 sq ft building at 141 Industrial Street — our first permanent home in 50 years.
SCRAP’s new location is at 141 Industrial St. A short 7 min walk (0.3 miles) away from our current location! Directions, transit options, and parking info can be found here.
The new space is nearly two times the size of our current Depot — 10,000 sq ft on the ground floor for SCRAP, plus a second floor for fellow arts nonprofits. That means:
Much more room to receive, sort, and display donated materials
Dedicated workshop space on-site for the first time
A more spacious, organized shopping experience
Parking!
And because we'll own the building, we won't face rising rents or another forced move. This is SCRAP's home — built to last.
Is your current location currently open?
Yes. The Depot at 2150 Newcomb Ave is open as usual — Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 6pm. Nothing changes for shoppers this month.
As we prepare to move, we’ll be running special sales and clearance events — a great time to find deals and help us move inventory thoughtfully.
Shopping moves to 141 Industrial Street in mid-August 2026. We’ll announce the official opening date well in advance — by email first, then on Instagram and the website. The best way to stay updated is to sign up for our newsletter!
Is the Depot still open for shopping?
The Depot at Newcomb Ave stays open for shopping through the summer and into the transition period. As we prepare to move, we'll be running special sales and clearance events — a great time to find deals and help us move inventory thoughtfully rather than haul it all across town.
Shopping moves to 141 Industrial Street in mid-September 2026. We'll announce the official opening date well in advance — by email first, then on Instagram and the website.
Email list subscribers hear news first. Sign up at scrap-sf.org if you're not already on the list.
We’re working hard to minimize any gap. There will be a brief full-closure window between the XX-XX, we’ll give you at least two weeks notice and let you know exactly what to expect on the other side. Again, sign up for our newsletter to stay up-to-date.
When will the new Depot be open for shopping?
The new SCRAP at 141 Industrial St will open for public shopping Mid-August 2026. We will confirm dates by the end of July!
Will prices and the shopping experience stay the same?
The spirit of SCRAP — affordable, creative, a little unpredictable — isn’t changing when the address does. Our mission is to make creative materials accessible to everyone, and that holds in the new space. If anything, the experience gets better: more room, better organization, and more space to browse and discover. Same SCRAP magic, more of it.
Are you currently accepting donations and where?
Yes, help us stock the shelves in our new home! Material donation intake will stop at our current location on June 7 and begin at our new location on June 16. As always, check the Donate Materials page on scrap-sf.org for the current accepted materials before you bring something in.
Will the types of materials you accept change?
Our donation guidelines are driven by what’s useful to our community — not by which building we’re in. We don’t anticipate major changes to accepted categories at the new location in fact we might be adding more categories. During our transition period, some categories may be temporarily paused. We’ll update the Donate Materials page and send email updates as those changes happen.
Will I need an appointment for donations?
Yes — our current policy (appointment required for more than 2 boxes) stays in effect, and we expect a similar approach at the new location. Scheduling helps us give your donation the attention it deserves.
What about donation pick-up - will that continue?
Appointment required for more than 2 boxes) stays in effect, and we expect a similar approach at the new location.
Will community workshops still be happening?
Yes. SCRAP’s community workshops are continuing without interruption. Starting in May 2026, workshops have moved to Cafe Alma, our partner venue in the Bayview while we finish building out the new space. Free community workshops at partner venues — including SFMOMA and SF Public Libraries — also continue on their regular schedule.
What changes about Workshops in the new building?
For the first time, SCRAP will have dedicated workshop space on-site. That means more workshops, more flexibility, and the ability to grow programming we’ve had to limit because of space. Details on the full workshop schedule at the new location will be shared as we get closer to the fall opening.
What about our after-school arts education programs
SCRAP’s school and after-school programs — including SCRAP in a Box and Sustainable Fashion Design — run through partner sites and are not affected by the Depot move. These programs continue without interruption. Questions? Email kayci@scrap-sf.org.
How will I know when things change?
This page is our running source of truth — it gets updated details are confirmed. Email subscribers hear every update first — before Instagram, before the website changes. Sign up here.
We’ll also send email announcements for every major milestone.

Can I help with the move?
Relocating takes a village - we'd love that. There are a few ways the community can support the transition. Lend your time and expertise with painting, landscaping, furniture assembly, packing/unpacking, deep cleaning, signage

State of play: The non-profit has been renting its Bayview warehouse from SFUSD for the past 25 years, but the building is slated for demolition in 2026 to make way for a central kitchen for the school district.
Scrap, the nonprofit Asawa cofounded in 1976 to collect overstock paper, fabric, and other cast-off materials and redistribute them to artists and teachers, is losing its lease from SFUSD.
Will there be a period when the Depot is fully closed?
